Somewhere along the way, El had managed to land a job at Hawkins Animal Shelter, which was one part animal control office for the county and one part pet hotel and even grooming salon, they did a little bit of everything.

El, not taking any kind of classes for animal medicine, was more on the rescue, homing and grooming side of things, but she also had a habit of occasionally taking animals outside for a little bit of socialization down the main street, never without her Hawkins Animal Shelter apron, both for the purposes of stashing smaller animals -or treats- in the pockets of, but also for making herself easily identified.

The shelter itself had a relatively small lobby, just a handful of chairs and the main desk, but they had two whole exam rooms plus the kennels in the back, along with the salon just past the lobby itself, no reason to freak out pets who were just there for a trim by making them go through the hospital and kennels first.

As often as not there was a cockatiel on a perch to one side of the counter, or for that matter riding around on an employee's shoulder. His name was Captain, and he was something of a mascot for the office, though he did, occasionally, get in trouble for swearing at customers and had to be put in the back to cool off.

[ooc: it's a free for all, stop by to see her, or to inquire about an animal, and if you're a friend who's lucky enough to work along the street (at Family Video, the Arcade, Hawkins Records and even Melvald's General Store) please feel free to assume she came by with a critter]

It had been a few months since the escape, since Eleven had cracked open a rift to Somewhere Else during their escape, had shoved her main tormentor through it as easily as a quintessential jock shoving a quintessential nerd into a locker, and then had, subsequently, managed to close the thing again with a little help from One.

The first few weeks had been spent in hiding, waiting for it all to come crashing down, waiting for someone to come for them while they were still recovering. But that just hadn't happened. They were safe, which was unexpected.

But that unexpected safety was how they'd made it to a few months later, One -now Henry once again- had a job and Eleven -now just Elle- spent most of her time at home trying to learn how to act like regular people, the goal was to get her enrolled in school, provided she could actually assimilate real world knowledge, history, and even pop culture by fall.

It was summer, but Henry would drop her off at the library before his shift, and if she finished her required reading list for the day before his shift was over, she walked home and watched TV until he got back so she could let him know what she'd learned. Days that she hadn't finished, he'd pick her up and they'd walk home together.

It was a good plan, and it was working well, because no one really bothered another weird kid at the library, even if it was summer and she could easily have been somewhere else, which was just fine with her as it meant she could post herself up in a quiet corner with her stack of books leaving only to go to the water fountain or for bathroom breaks, reading and taking notes.

Today was one of the days when she was still entrenched by afternoon, curled up in one of the big chairs at the edge of the young adult section, where she still had clear lines of sight to the exits, Poe's Collected Works open across the arm of the chair, brow furrowed as she went back over the last few lines, realizing that she hadn't actually absorbed any of it.
